THE CALL

The Call

What summons us forward — the felt pull toward what matters, what is needed, what asks to be brought into being.

The Call is what emerges from the Paradox. When we encounter the limits of our knowing — when we stand at the horizon of our understanding — something happens. We feel summoned. Not by a voice, not by a command, but by a pull. Something asks to be attended to, responded to, brought into being.

The Call is not a choice we make. It is something that arrives. It comes from the situation, from the other, from the work, from the world. A patient arrives in the emergency room. A student asks a question that stops you. A problem presents itself that you cannot look away from. A relationship asks for truth.

What makes the Call significant is that it cannot be fully answered. Because we are finite — because the Paradox ensures that our knowing is always incomplete — our response to the Call is always partial, always approximate, always in need of revision. And yet we must respond. The Call does not wait for certainty.

This is the existential situation of every human being: called forward by what matters, unable to fully grasp it, required to act anyway. How we respond — whether we lean in or pull away — determines our orientation.
